Information to Vietnam

GEOGRAPHY

Lying on the east of Indochina Peninsula with a distance of 1650 km from south to north, Vietnam is one of the most romantic and naturally beautiful destinations in the world. The diverse natural environment, geography, history, and culture have created a great potential for the tourism industry.

Vietnam is a country with a past as rich as the soil in the blazing green deltas. This past reads like a romantic legend, full of heroic struggles and astounding victories whereby this small country retained its culture, absorbing and adapting the strengths of its foes but never losing its traditions or sense of history. In Vietnam, traditions carry real meaning. Ancient heroes are still venerated at colourful temple festivals, people honour their ancestors, and village elders teach values of hard work, hospitality, and filial loyalty. Most of ethnic groups live in remote areas and follow age-old customs, therefore Vietnam has a great chance to offer unparalleled cultural exploration.

As well as fine weather, there is spectacular natural scenery and historic sites. Vietnam's greatest resource is its friendly, welcoming people. Long closed to the outside world, Vietnam retains a charming innocence that most tourist regions lack. Yet in the decade since the country opened its doors to visitors, the country has built world-class hotels and tourism facilities with international standards and traditional Vietnamese hospitality. Vietnam is ready to take you on an unforgettable adventure.

CUSTOMS - HABITS

In general, the Vietnamese are exceptionally friendly and outgoing. Be prepared for many personal questions and comments regarding your age, marital status, and weight. Easy-going people may put these types of questions. Although this may make you believe that the Vietnamese are open people, don't make the mistake of asking too many personal questions. Let the person you are talking with guide the conversation. In fact, because of reputed hospitality, they are warm, helpful and easily ignore mistakes when your behavior doesn't apply to their standard. Above all, they also know much about the western culture.

The Vietnamese get very embarrassed by displays of anger. Their usual reaction is to laugh. This is not because they do not take the situation seriously, but because they don't know how else to respond. It is not a good idea to chastise a person in front of others. This is a culture affected strongly by the concepts of pride and "face". Fortunately, there are no unique gestures that will get you in trouble.

The Vietnamese eating habit tends towards vegetarianism. Rice and vegetables are the main course of the meal that may be diversified by aquatic products. Boiling is a special way of cooking of the Vietnamese people. Vietnamese people like a synthetic food processing style that involves many materials and ingredients. Today, although meat and fish are the main dishes of the meal, the Vietnamese do not forget pickled egg-plant.

Vietnamese people are very helpful. Besides, they are good at foreign languages, so it's a great advantage to foreigners. If you have any troubles, don't hesitate to ask them for a more comfortable stay.

Sapa- a great place to travel

Sapa is situated in the country’s northwest at an altitude of 1,600 meters. In the early 20th century the French took advantage of Sapa's cool climate, developing it into a summer retreat from the heat and humidity of Hanoi.

Today, vietnam sapa  town still retains its European feel, largely due to the French architecture and gardens and today is a popular destination due to its beautiful scenery and colorful ethnic people. Sapa town is reached via a winding 40km road from the town of Lao Cai.

The drive provides a taste of what is to come as the road winds its way up through lush rice-terraced valleys and breath-taking scenery passing several different minority villages along the way. The valleys surrounding Sapa are home to several of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic minority groups, each with their own distinctive dress, customs and dialects.

These tribes can all be seen at the weekend market in Sapa town to trade with one another. Sapa has also become a destination for travelers seeking adventure for Vietnam travel. It is a staging point for trekking in the nearby valleys and for climbing Mount Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak as well as motorcycle rides in to the wild hill country. Extended treks to visit villages of minority tribes are also available.

Places of interest
Mount Fansipan

Indochina's highest peak, Mount Fansipan is only 9km from Sapa town and climbing to its summit is one of Asia's most challenging adventures. The trek takes visitors through tiny remote villages and areas of rainforest.

Hilltribe Villages (Ta Phin, Ta Van, Lao Chai, Cat Cat)

Shorter treks are also very rewarding, and within just a few hours walkers can be in villages that have seen few foreigners. The hill-tribe peoples in this area of Vietnam wear colorful traditional dress as a matter of daily routine and all follow their traditional agricultural way of life which has remained unchanged for centuries.

The various ethnic peoples are relatively easy to identify due to their attire. For example the H’mong wears dark clothing, usually blue or black. The dye is fashioned from the indigo or hemp plant that is native to the area. H’mong women wear long aprons with embroidered waistcoats and have their hair rolled up into a turban-like hat, whilst the men wear a black skullcap, long waistcoat and loose trousers.

Another equally distinctive minority are the Dao (pronounced Zao). Dao women are particularly striking as they shave their hair and eyebrows and wear a large red turban often covered with old coins or jewelry.

Travel to Hoi an in Vietnam

The old city of Hoi An was the most pleasant surprise of our first trip. All the guidebooks will tell you that the city is a picturesque village "lost in time" as it were. Jaded Asian travelers that we are, we expected a Singapore-style block or so of old buildings gutted and rebuilt to look like what we think old buildings should look like, but with all the modern amenities, like air conditioning.

>> Others topics:  Travel to danang tourism

That definitely does not describe Hoi An. We're talking serious quantities of old buildings - old inside and out. Before we go too far, let's be sure to point out that Hoi An is very tourist oriented. You're never more than a few meters from an art gallery, or a tailor. More on that later.

Still, it is like a whole town went into stasis some time at the end of the nineteenth century and only came out a few years ago. If it wasn't for the power lines and television aerials, it could be the 1940's.
The old town area covers about a dozen blocks. At one end is one of the more interesting sites, the Japanese covered bridge. Some of the most notable buildings within the old town itself are the Chinese congregation halls built by Chinese settlers from various regions of China.

Also be sure to set aside some time to browse through the central market. If you have time, a tour of the nearby river and its islands by boat is worthwhile.

4 essential weaknesses of Vietnam in the East Sea and Chinese conspiracy

Mr. Doan Manh Dung: Four essential weaknesses protect Vietnam territory from the sea in order: Cam Ranh, Son Duong, Nam Du and Con Dao. Previously I said that only 3 points, but after the Viking ship was attacked and broke up the cable that needs to use Con Dao for the protective role of oil and gas regions.

Four essential weaknesses points are identified based on natural geographical factors. Because of a small, poor country, everything from construction to protection of the country must know how to use the natural geographical features. Vietnam Navy has military bases strong enough to defense and attack. The naval bases must have a minimum depth of 10m, width of water surface capable of receiving many military vessels, with high mountains to shield and favorable logistics supply. And the collaboration with foreign partners in economic development of the above weaknesses need fastened demand if patriotic war happens
More details please, sir?
First of all, we need to know the natural characteristics that influence marine over the East Sea. Due to the flow and the monsoon, in winter, ships from the North to the South East Sea have to move closely the coast of central Vietnam (green line - picture below). Also from the South to the North, the ships go away from the central coast to avoid reverse currents (red lines).
In North Bay is Son Duong port which is located in the south of Vung Ang of Ha Tinh. It has a special position (position 4).
This position is the same latitude with Sanya port, with the atomic fleet of China. Son Duong port location is located just north of Ngang mountain pass where the Highway 1A road passes through the mountains and tunnels. Depth of Son Duong port after building dikes 3,000 meters from Ron Island to Son Duong port area enclosed storm and reached a depth of -16m to over broad waters.
So, Son Duong port is the essential of the North Bay, controlled sea and road from South and Central supplies to North Vietnam.
On the south coast, Con Dao has unicorn shaped, back towards the Southwest - Northeast, looking to the East (position 5).
nga nguyen 16 2
Eastern coasts, the waters are shallow. But Southwest of Con Dao is Ben Dam. The Northeast of Ben Dam has Cross Mountain with 577m height; the southwest is Hon Ba with 242m height, while the south is Hon Bo with 324m height. Ben Dam depth is quite ideal -13m, sheltered Northeast and Southwest winds, favorable for a deep water port for naval and commercial. This location is close to the international sea route through the Southern seas.
This is the weakness of the Southern coast. If Vietnam has a strong naval base in here, it will help control the sea route to the coast of South Vietnam and the keeping safety for the oil fields in the Southeast.
In Thailand Bay, the coast continental shelf of Rach Gia - Ha Tien is very shallow. The construction of artificial deepwater port in this area is very expensive, especially the cost of maintenance.
Nam Du archipelagos located between the road from Phu Quoc to Ca Mau, about 50km from the coast (position 6). Natural depth between Nam Du archipelagos is -10m, with 309m high mountains in the west. The island in the East covered Northeast monsoon. So this area is suitable for mooring boats, favorable for a best naval port in the southwest coast of Vietnam. Nam Du archipelagos are the weakness that protect Southwest coast of Vietnam.
When the Kra canal of Thailan is opened, the Nam Du archipelagos position becomes more important in the protection of international maritime channels across the Gulf of Thailand.

Travel to Halong bay in Vietnam

The bay consists of a dense cluster of 3000 limestone monolithic islands, each topped with thick jungle vegetation, which rise spectacularly from the ocean. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves. Hang Dau Go (Wooden stakes Cave) is the largest grotto in the Halong area. French tourists visited in the late 19th century, and named the cave Grotte des Merveilles. Its three large chambers contain large numerous stalactites and stalagmites (as well as 19th century French graffiti).

Some of the islands support floating villages of fishermen, who ply the shallow waters for 200 species of fish and 450 different kinds of mollusks. Many of the islands have acquired their names as a result of interpretation of their unusual shapes: such names include Voi Islet (elephant), Ga Choi Islet (fighting cock), and Mai Nha Islet (roof). 989 of the islands have been given names. Birds and animals including bantams, antelopes, monkeys, and iguanas also live on some of the islands.

The bay was World Heritage listed by UNESCO at the 18th meeting of the Committee of the World Heritages of UNESCO (in Thailand on December 17th, 1994). It is one of viet nam‘s most popular tourist destinations.

Halong Bay has been the setting for local naval battles against Vietnam’s coastal neighbours. On three occasions in the labyrinth of channels between the islands the Vietnamese army stopped the Chinese from landing. In 1288 General Tran Hung Dao stopped Mongol ships from sailing up the nearby Bach Dang River by placing steel-tipped wooden stakes at high tide, sinking the Mongol Dubhai Khan’s fleet.

During the Vietnam War, many of the channels between the islands were heavily mined by the navy of the United States, some of which pose a threat to shipping to this day.

The surrounding land region of Halong City is rich with high grade coal deposits, and is operated by the Vietnamese government.

Cu Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City

During the American War, the villages around the district of Cu Chi supported a substantial Viet Cong (VC) presence. Faced with American attempts to neutralize them, they quite literally dug themselves out of harm’s way, and the legendary Cu Chi tunnels were the result.

Today, tourists can visit a short stretch of the tunnels, drop to their hands and knees and squeeze underground for an insight into life as a tunnel-dwelling resistance fighter. Some sections of the tunnels have been widened to allow passage for the fuller frame of Westerners but it’s still a dark, sweaty, claustrophobic experience, and not one you should rush into unless you’re confident you won’t suffer a subterranean freak-out.

A brief history

When the first spades sank into the earth around Cu Chi, the region was covered by a rubber plantation tied to a French tyre company. Anti-colonial Viet Minh dug the first tunnels here in the late 1940s; intended primarily for storing arms, they soon became valuable hiding places for the resistance fighters themselves. Over a decade later, VC activists controlling this staunchly anti-government area, many of them local villagers, followed suit and went to ground. By 1965, 250km of tunnels crisscrossed Cu Chi and surrounding areas – just across the Saigon River was the notorious guerrilla power base known as the Iron Triangle – making it possible for the VC guerrilla cells in the area to link up with each other and to infiltrate Saigon at will. One section daringly ran underneath the Americans’ Cu Chi Army Base.

Within the multi-level tunnel complexes, there were latrines, wells, meeting rooms and dorms. Rudimentary hospitals were also scratched out of the soil. Operations were carried out by torchlight using instruments fashioned from shards of ordnance, and a patient’s own blood was caught in bottles and then pumped straight back using a bicycle pump and a length of rubber hosing. Such medical supplies as existed were secured by bribing ARVN soldiers in Saigon. Doctors also administered herbs and acupuncture – even honey was used for its antiseptic properties. Kitchens cooked whatever the tunnellers could get their hands on. With rice and fruit crops destroyed, the diet consisted largely of tapioca, leaves and roots, at least until enough bomb fragments could be transported to Saigon and sold as scrap to buy food. Morale was maintained in part by performing troupes that toured the tunnels, though songs like “He who comes to Cu Chi, the Bronze Fortress in the Land of Iron, will count the crimes accumulated by the Enemy” were not quite up to the standard set by Bob Hope as he entertained the US troops.

Ben Thanh market in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam

Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City, offers a shopping experience to suit every taste and budget. Visitors to the city should experience the traditional bustling markets that still thrive despite the influx of international businesses and enormous shopping malls. Ben Thanh Market is one of the city’s busiest and attracts locals and tourists alike, who bargain and barter their way to retail happiness.

At that time, the market was built from wooden walls with a thatched roof. It was in a prosperous area along the bank of the river. In 1859, when French troops invaded Gia Dinh, the market was completely destroyed. The following year, the French built on this place a market with houses with solid walls and brick roofs.Located in the center of Ho Chi Minh City, Ben Thanh market is the largest and busiest in the southern megalopolis. Ha Minh Hong, Professor of history at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities of Ho Chi Minh City, says:“In the early 19th century, Ben Thanh market was on the bank of Ben Nghe river. Because the market is located near a pier which means Ben in Vietnamese and a citadel or Thanh in Vietnamese, it is called Ben Thanh”.

Visit the Ancient Village of Bat Trang, Vietnam

700 years later, I now take a journey to Bat Trang, along the dike by the Red river to witness the beauty of potteries. Bat Trang includes two villages, Bat Trang and Giang Cao, Gia Lam district, Hanoi. The commune features a pottery market, which is a destination of anyone, who would like to contemplate the beauty of potteries.

Stepping in Bat Trang pottery market, one can see the wonder of potteries that we cannot ignore and surely will buy something to take back home. At the entrance gate of the market, statue coloring workshops are favorite places of not only chirldren but also adults. Here you can choose a statue and color it as what you imagine. After being colored, the statue will be your own work and taken home as a sourvenir.

You can also try to make some potteries right in the parking. With available wet clay and machineries, artisans will instruct you to create your own potteries. The coloring and making potteries are some of entertaining activities in the village. In addition, you can wander around thousands of various potteries, in which some of them are 2m hight, to enjoy the beauty of potteries. You can find every type of pottery products in Bat Trang market. You can buy a vase or a glazed jar to decorate your room.

You can also buy a variety of statues such as the statues of woodcutter, Buddha and fisherman to make a collection of the trip. Stylized teapots at over a hunddred thousand VND are the most attractive. Many shops do not allow you to take photos. This is explained that because many tourists just would like to takes photos without buying any products, meanwhile the products need to be sold. To take photos in these shops, you have to buy some products here!.

Reunification Palace

Surrounded by Royal Palm trees, the dissonant 1960s architecture of this government building and the eerie mood that accompanies a walk through its deserted halls make it one of the most intriguing spectacles in HCMC. The building is deeply associated with the fall of Saigon in 1975, yet it's the overblown kitsch detailing and period motifs that steal the show.

The first Communist tanks to arrive in Saigon rumbled here on the morning of 30 April 1975 and it’s as if time has stood still since then. After crashing through the wrought-iron gates – in a dramatic scene recorded by photojournalists and shown around the world – a soldier ran into the building and up the stairs to unfurl a VC flag from the balcony. In an ornate reception chamber, General Minh, who had become head of the South Vietnamese state only 43 hours before, waited with his improvised cabinet. ‘I have been waiting since early this morning to transfer power to you’, Minh said to the VC officer who entered the room. ‘There is no question of your transferring power’, replied the officer. ‘You cannot give up what you do not have.’

In 1868 a residence was built on this site for the French governor-general of Cochinchina and gradually it expanded to become Norodom Palace. When the French departed, the palace became home to the South Vietnamese president Ngo Dinh Diem. So unpopular was Diem that his own air force bombed the palace in 1962 in an unsuccessful attempt to kill him. The president ordered a new residence to be built on the same site, this time with a sizeable bomb shelter in the basement. Work was completed in 1966, but Diem did not get to see his dream house as he was killed by his own troops in 1963.
