The archipelago has a global significance thanks to its plentiful species found nowhere else. It is home to the golden-headed langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus), one of the top ten rare primates in the world due.

Cat Ba boasts many beautiful caves and grottos such as Trung Trang, Quan Y and Thien Long…

Trung Trang is the largest valley in Cat Ba Island with the total area of 300 ha, from 10-30 meter lower than the sea level, which is 15km northwest of the island. It is about 300 m walk. Beautiful with glistening stalactite & stalagmite it is! Visiting Trung Trang, one has learnt that it is deeply a thousand-year great work of Nature!

Quan Y grotto. “Quan Y” means “Army medical care”. This special name derives from the Wartime against American Air force, when Vietnamese people built a hospital with hundreds of beds inside this grotto. Today, visitors can easily reach it as Quan Y Grotto is on the main way along the Island, only about 13 km from the Island’s centre.

About 2 hours traveling by boat from Phu Long wharf is Thien Long grotto. It has just been discovered since 1997. This is one of the most beautiful caves and grottos in Ha Long bay. As wide and deep with miraculously various shaped & colorful stalactites and stalagmites, and tree roots from the mount to the bottom, Thien Long grotto is admired by any tourist stepping inside. One even said: “It looks like a pretty and peaceful fairy land on the sea..!” after her tour here. Also, people can feel free to contemplate the coral system, salty lakes and ponds in and around, which are definitely rich of marine bio-diversity.

Go swimming & entertain yourself, or you might regret!

A peak mountain in the shape of a turtle divides the beach into 2 small beaches, Cat Co One and Cat Co Two. On the right hand is fabricated rock mountain, while on the left hand is the clear and blue sea water, white and smooth sand. The beauty of the beach has been changing side by side with the flying time. Yet, never would it lose the natural luring power.

In the morning, after enjoying the sunrise on the sea, tourists will visit Monkey Island, conquering Hai Thanh mount, Hon Thot mount or Hon Guoc mount, and swimming in the pure sea as much as you can to feel how fresh a “heaven” can be! 

In the afternoon, you may discover the area’s original beauty by renting a kayak to paddle to the bay. Lan Ha Bay

Lan Ha bay is situated in the southeast of Cat Ba Island. It takes about 30 minutes to go there from Cat Ba by boat. The bay is large with arched shore. Getting inside, a number of islands and beaches are welcoming tourists. 

Not only is it famous for beautiful beaches, but also for the imposing caves and ideal place for fishing. A lot of visitors who are fond of fishing do not want to come back once staying here for a while!

Viet Hai village

An Giang Province is best-known for being home to pastel-painted Chau Doc, the closest large town to the Vietnamese/Cambodian border crossing on the Mekong River. Wedged between the Cambodian frontier, Kien Giang and Can Tho provinces to the south and Dong Thap province to the north, An Giang is a particularly riverine province, with both the Bassac and Mekong Rivers within its boundaries. The nondescript provincial capital Long Xuyen lies around 50km southeast of the border with Cambodia. Some travellers may find it convenient to pass through here for its transportation connections but there are otherwise few other reasons to stay in the capital. Long Xuyen boasts a sprawling and rather interesting riverside market, a huge cathedral and a smattering of colonial relics, but is otherwise a nondescript spot. Few travellers and backpackers choose to stay here and it is easy to see why - most head here only to make a transport connection. Nevertheless ample accommodation aside from the dozen dodgy places outside town are on offer and restaurants are scattered across town. The most interesting attraction in Long Xuyen town itself is the massive wet market that runs along the river's edge to the east of the central pier, where you could easily lose yourself for a couple of hours. From the pier, you can also organise short boat trips into the surrounds, priced by the hour. You needn't look for a boatman or woman - they will find you.

Aside from the market and a boat trip, start planning your escape to a more interesting destination. Chau Doc sits at the junction of a tributary linking the Bassac and Mekong Rivers and the Bassac River itself. An incredibly friendly and bustling little city, Chau Doc has a colour scheme to match its ambience, with bright pastel hues of green, blue and purple adorning many of the newer shopfronts. If you're arriving here from Cambodia, be prepared for the shock into technicolour paradise. Chau Doc locals are known for being very warm and approachable - even the xe dap loi drivers, as pestering as they are, are friendly. English is spoken in most of the foreigner - targeted guesthouses and hotels, and most restaurants have an English menu. A highlight of a visit to Chau Doc is a boat trip on one of the small paddle boats that collect near the western end of the park. For a few dollars an hour they will paddle you around the many floating raft houses and fish farms. Doing this at dawn can be very photogenic and rewarding. Chau Doc is also the closest large town to the Vietnamese/Cambodian river border crossing. If you're heading to or from Phnom Penh by boat, you'll pass through Chau Doc, so try to allow for an overnight stay.

Ben Tre Province is made up of three main islands wedged between the Tien Giang River to the north and to Co Chien River to the south with the Ham Luong River running straight down the centre. All are effectively offshoots of the Mekong River as it splits out into many fingers before spilling out into the South South East Asia Sea. Famous for its coconut desserts, the province is suitably covered in coconut trees. During the war these coconut trees were used to make coconut oil which was then used as a valuable substitute for kerosene.

As far as exploring the Delta is concerned, Ben Tre is a dead-end province. Once you have experienced all the province has to offer, you will need to turn around and head back through My Tho to get any further into the Delta. That is not to suggest it is not worth visiting - it is. For starters, you can do boat trips from here for a fraction of the price of a trip from My Tho (either organised through Ben Tre Tourist, or via the boatmen at the pier) and, with its large network of minor canals, there is a lot of scope for riverine exploration. There is also a small museum and a pleasing riverfront worth investigating. Ben Tre is clean -- it's as if somewhere between the My Tho ferry crossing and downtown you pass through a cleanliness vortex - the roads are spotless, the pavements are tiled and smooth and there's little refuse - even in the market.

Can Tho Province sprawls westwards from the eponymous provincial capital along the southern bank of the Bassac (Hau) River -- the larger of the two branches of the Mekong River. Bordered to the west by An Giang and Tien Giang provinces, to the south by Hau Giang and to the north, on the other side of the river, by Vinh Long and Dong Thap, Can Tho Province is one of the most popular Delta destinations among travellers and tourists alike. The province is actually a municipality which was given provinical status when it was carved out of the larger original province (also called Can Tho) in 2004. The remainder forms the new province of Hau Giang which lies to the south. This elevated status reflects Can Tho's importance in the region, both as a trading and transportation hub and as home to the Delta's largest city. Home to over a million people, Can Tho City is the logical hub for anyone planning on exploring the province. With a wealth of hotels and guesthouses, a very well developed and affordable tourism infrastructure, a healthy supply of eateries and a selection of interesting floating markets within easy reach, it really is difficult to fault - if you've got time for just one destination in the Delta, this is where you should be heading.

The Delta is often refered to as Vietnam's rice basket, and Can Tho Province, with its tremendously fertile soil is one of the largest producers in the region. Aside from rice, it also grows masses of fruit from its many orchards and farms and it's these goods which tourists flock to see in the floating markets dotted around the capital. The main reason visitors come to Can Tho is to tour the nearby floating markets. While these are highly recommended, the riverfront promenade itself is also pleasant with some good places to eat and relax in. The city has a good range of accommodation from cheap backpacker haunts right through to comfortable mid-range digs and its urbane atmosphere contrasts to the more rural feel of the towns further out in the Delta.

The large, curving province of Kien Giang is wedged between the Gulf of Thailand, Cambodia and the rest of the Mekong Delta. Best known for the magnificent Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang Province has some engaging towns and a few good stretches beaches as well. Aside from Phu Quoc, the province also has beaches and caves around Ha Tien and Hon Chong - the landscape is not unlike that around Ninh Binh in northern Vietnam with limestone outcrops. The provincial capital, Rach Gia, is a bustling little seaport town with some fine eating, good hotels and lots of friendly people. It's an interesting region, where Vietnam almost seems to merge with Cambodia - a few days of relaxed travelling throughout the province will show you an unusual side of the country that almost no tourists get to see.

Tien Giang Province is the closest Mekong Delta province to Saigon and is a very popular destination for organised tours out of Saigon. The provincial capital sits on the northern bank of the Mekong River and has a number of offshore islands that can be visited. Most tours throughout Tien Giang Province run in boats that seat 20-plus people and while such numbers bring costs down to a more reasonable level. If you are interested in exploring riverine life, you can head further south to Can Tho or west to Chau Doc, where prices far more reasonable and well-tailored to independent travellers.

Beautiful in Bac Lieu

Bac Lieu Province, around 100 km from the southernmost tip of Vietnam, is home to a popular bird sanctuary located in Hiep Thanh Commune of Bac Lieu Town. The sanctuary is one of the most attractive ecological tourist spots in the Mekong River Delta.

The Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is the vestige of a forest which ran along the East Sea coast and came into existence over a century ago. The sanctuary is just around five kilometers from the town center. It covers some 107 hectares and lies within the remaining 385 hectares of forest area. The sanctuary is now home to 46 bird species, 60 fish species, seven frog species, 10 species of mammals, eight reptile species, and 100 species of plants. On the ground are a massive number of eggs, and in the air, you can spot some species with 2 m wing-spans.

Over nearly one century, the Sanctuary is the place where generations of birds are born, usually in the rainy season, and developed. There are currently some 40,000 birds and 5,000 nests, according to preliminary statistics. Birds mostly gather here during the rainy season between May and October. In August and September, flocks of birds gather at the sanctuary to build nests and breed. The forest comes alive with the singing of various kinds of birds and trees overflow with hundreds of birds’ nests. The Sanctuary is also the important home of several water birds, mainly teal, stork, heron, night heron and cormorant.
According to documentation of Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary Nature Reserve, in the first, it was a coastal rich and diversified salt forest floor with the natural salt-marsh ecosystem. As a part of the remaining forest floor along the East Sea, it is increasingly far from the sea due to alluvial deposits. In 1962, it was looked after, protected and controlled by a household. Then, the local authority realized that it is a precious natural property, so they have a step by step investment.

The best time to visit Bac Lieu Bird Sanctuary is in the early morning when most birds leave their nests to begin a day of feeding. Alternatively, at sunset the birds can also be seen more easily as they return to their nests to sleep, flocks of bird fly one after another. Located in An Ninh Dong Commune , Tuy An District, Phu Yen Province, Ghenh Da Dia is strangely structured rocks include large upright stones equally arranged in a star pattern. Being a riddle of nature, like a giant jigsaw, the rapids is irritatingly made of the same shaped pieces, and forms a solidified structure that has proved more than just a curiosity for thousands.

A strange geological phenomenon

Millions of years ago, during volcano eruption, mineral flows melting will be frozen when they encounter water and then the solid breaks into columns or obliques. That created the beautiful landscape of Ghenh Da Dia for the present time. Time over time, the landscape is rearranged as an artistic work by the hand of nature. Ghenh Da Dia is about 1km2 large, half in the sea and half above sea level in Vietnam.

Looking down on it, visitors often liken it to a gigantic beehive, others as a pile of stone plates. For despite a lengthy series of historical, archeological and scientific probes of the cliff’s square kilometer, its formation remains a mystery.

The stones in Ghenh Da Dia are bazan stones of dark black and light yellow. There exists large stones of tons and small stones with different shapes: round, pentagon, polygon and so on. The stones take the right column or a settlement close to each other like disks arranged on couples together. Even counting the stone columns has failed to yield an exact figure as exhausted researchers usually call a halt at around 35,000. The stones are 60-80cm in visible height and 20-30cm across and cluster round a small fresh water pond that is fed by underground rivers and never dries up.

In Ghenh Da Dia, there only remains the unique scenery of the sea and stones, so everything is still primary, environment is so pure, air is fresh and comfortable.

Besides Ghenh Da Dia is Bang beach, with rocks “lie” quiet under the shadow of trees. This is quite ideal for relaxation, camping and extra activities. Ghenh Da Dia and the beach are closed with a famous tourist attraction which is "Hòn đá lực lượng" - a deep and wide grotto that saves the legendary people in a war period. Visiting Ghenh Da Dia, you have a chance to view many species of marine creatures, especially “Mứt” seaweed - a type of kelp which is salty and sticks to the stones, looking like a network.

Thousands of visitors take a chance on to Phu Quoc Island's unsupervised beaches every day, hotel guards and provincial officials say.

Nguyen Phuoc Nghia, the deputy head of the island district's culture and information department, said no official agencies have conducted a survey of the safety of its beaches.

“Usually tourism firms study the risks themselves and alert the tourists on their own,”  Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper quoted Nghia as saying.

The paper reported that at least four have drowned on the country’s largest island so far this year--one of the victims was a hotel lifeguard.

On June 16, the 33-year-old lifeguard (identified only as N.T.H.) swam out into rough surf to save a drowning 51-year-old tourist from Hanoi.

But both ended up perishing in the rough waves.

A woman from the southern province of Dong Nai was swept away one evening less than a week later. Hotel guards only recovered her body the following morning when the waves pushed it back to shore.

Certain hotel and resort owners have hired guards to rescue tourists when needed, although they are not professionally trained.

Many of those guards told a Tuoi Tre reporter that they usually warn tourists against venturing into rough surf or swimming at night, but they cannot afford to maintain a round-the-clock patrol to prevent them from sneaking out.

Nguyen Thanh Nhanh, Phu Quoc's police chief, said hotel and resort licenses don't cover beaches, which are under government management.F

Under current law, it's entirely up to the hotels whether they hire a lifeguard or not. 

The Saigon – Phu Quoc Hotel hired seven lifeguards in 2000 who have been active ever since.

The crew takes turns guarding the beach from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, and puts flags up along the shore when they're off-duty to discourage people from swimming.

Tran Hoang Khai, the team leader, said they maintain a significant supply of lifebuoys and provide tourists with daily weather updates.

Many of the other 44 hotels employ far fewer lifeguards.

Dang Thi Ngoc Quyen, an employee at the Ngan Sao Hotel, said they have three beach guards, each in charge of one shift.

They can swim, but have only been trained in providing first aid, Quyen said.

“Our lifeguards need proper training, but there’s nothing like that in the area,” she said.

Nghia said that even the provincial government isn't authorized to issue sea rescue certificates.

However, the National Tourism Administration agreed to help organize a training course that's scheduled to begin on September 22, he said.

The problem, however, could persist as the district government lacks sufficient funds to maintain such a force.

As such, hotels and tourists may have to continue to help each other keep the beaches safe--the latter by obeying hotel lifeguard instructions and warnings.

PLACES TO SEE

Do Son  beach

Stretching 22km wide between two rivers Cam and Van Uc, Do Son with its soft white sand has always been an ideal beach destination. Besides the luscious natural beauty of its 3 beaches, Do Son also processes many cultural and historical artifacts.

Here, on top of Ngoc Son mountain are the remains of a 10 story tower made of clay and an ancient Buddhist temple (both built in the 11th century). The temple displays one of the most grandiose and significant Vietnamese Buddhist bells of the era. The bell was, for a few hundred years, submerged in the ocean after its fall during a large storm. It wasn’t until 1958 that local fishermen managed to re-discover the bell and bring it up to land. After nature’s harsh treatments, the bell (made of a large percentage of pure gold) still chimes near to perfection.

Buffalo fighting is a famous local tradition that has dated back hundreds of years. Tourists coming to Do Son on the 9th of the 8th month yearly (according to the lunar calendar) can witness the final rounds of this much anticipated festive event at the town stadium.

Those keen on history may chose to visit the “No-Number Port” where ships without license numbers from North Vietnam started their journey on the Ho Chi Minh sea route to bring aid to the North Vietnam army during the war. Another historical destination is the newly restored Bao Dai mansion, where Vietnam’s last king spent many summer holidays and served important guests.

Do Son also boasts a grand casino that promises to bring fun and entertainment to all who remember to bring their passport upon entry. 

Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba is the largest out of the nearly 2000 islands surrounding the Halong bay area. Cat ba possesses 17.300ha of tropical forest, 570 of which is primeval. Under the green canopy is a diverse ecosystem, with hundreds of valuable medicinal herbs and trees. Cat Ba  is also home to the endangered Komodo iguana, which can way up to 100kg. Tourists visiting Cat Ba have plenty of choices between the island’s tropical beaches, caves and the Cat Ba  National Park.

Splendid Hội An

Among the greatest cities for bikers, Hoi An should be placed in the top position. Nowhere else is suitable for travel by bicycle as Hoi An.

From wandering the streets in adorable little path along the Thu Bon River to Cua Dai beach or bumpy dirt roads across immense fields, Hoi An has its all for an exciting exploring trip with your favorite bikes.

Vung Tau – The New Rising

Vung Tau City has a nice road run along the sea coast, wrapped around this exciting city. Not noisy, just the waves and the wind sound.
